Read Clio matters, contacts, time, tasks, calendar and bills; add matters, time entries, notes. Hosted by usefulapi — connect from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any MCP client.
Team and Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector for the organization first.

}No Add custom MCP server option? It depends on your account or workspace settings: see OpenAI's guide.
Run these commands. The second one opens the login page:
Other MCP clients (Windsurf, Cline, Zed and more): add the URL as a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP). The client then opens the login page in your browser. Do not add an Authorization header: see Before you connect.
You sign in with your Clio account and approve the access (OAuth). You do not need an API key.
This server reads your firm's matters, contacts, time and expense entries, tasks, calendar, bills, document details (names and metadata, never file contents) and notes. It can create contacts, matters, time entries, tasks, notes and calendar entries and update tasks when you ask it to; it never deletes anything, changes a bill or touches payments or trust accounts. It can do only what your Clio user is allowed to do. This server is for Clio accounts in the US region. You can revoke access any time in Clio.
Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config. The server signs you in with OAuth: you sign in with your Clio account. If the config has such a header, remove it: some clients then send that header instead of the login token, and every call fails with 401.
Turn on the Clio connector, then ask in plain words. The AI picks the tools.
| Tool | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
clio_who_am_i | read | Who am I Fetch the Clio user this access token belongs to — name, email, subscription type, time zone and default_calendar_id (needed to create calendar entries). A cheap way to confirm the token and region are right. Clio: GET /users/who_am_i.json. |
clio_list_users | read | List users List the firm's Clio users (attorneys and staff) — use their ids for responsible attorneys, time entries and task assignees. Clio: GET /users.json. |
clio_list_matters | read | List matters Search and list matters (the firm's cases) with their client, practice area, responsible attorney and status. `query` wildcard-matches matter number or description and the client's name. Clio: GET /matters.json. |
clio_get_matter | read | Get one matter Fetch a single matter by id, with its client, practice area, stage and attorneys. Clio: GET /matters/{id}.json. |
clio_list_contacts | read | List contacts Search and list contacts — clients, prospective clients, companies, opposing parties and co-counsel. `query` wildcard-matches name, email, phone, address and more. Clio: GET /contacts.json. |
clio_get_contact | read | Get one contact Fetch a single contact by id with all email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses and web sites. Clio: GET /contacts/{id}.json. |
clio_list_activities | read | List activities (time and expenses) List activities — time entries, expense entries and fixed fees — with hours, rate, total and billing status. Filter by matter, user, type, status or date range. `quantity` is in seconds; `quantity_in_hours` is hours. Clio: GET /activities.json. |
clio_list_tasks | read | List tasks List tasks with status, priority, due date, matter and assignee. Filter by matter, assignee, status, priority or a due-date range — e.g. what is due this week. Clio: GET /tasks.json. |
clio_list_calendar_entries | read | List calendar entries List calendar entries (hearings, meetings, deadlines) in a time window, optionally for one matter or calendar. Set expanded=true to get each occurrence of recurring events. Clio: GET /calendar_entries.json. |
clio_list_bills | read | List bills List bills (invoices) with state, totals, amount due and dates. Filter by client, matter, state, overdue, or issue/due date. Clio: GET /bills.json. |
clio_get_bill | read | Get one bill Fetch a single bill by id with its state, totals, balance, client and matters. Clio: GET /bills/{id}.json. |
clio_list_documents | read | List documents List documents (metadata only: name, file name, type, size, category, dates) for a matter, a contact or a folder, or search them by name. Clio: GET /documents.json. |
clio_list_notes | read | List notes List notes on a matter or a contact, with subject, body, date and author. Clio requires type; narrow to one matter or contact with matter_id or contact_id. Clio: GET /notes.json. |
clio_create_contact | write | Create a contact WRITE: Create a contact — a person (give first_name and/or last_name) or a company (give name) — optionally with an email address and phone number. Clio: POST /contacts.json. |
clio_create_matter | write | Create a matter WRITE: Open a new matter for an existing client contact. Requires the client's contact id and a description. Clio: POST /matters.json. |
clio_create_time_entry | write | Record a time entry WRITE: Record billable (or non-billable) time on a matter. Give hours as a decimal (1.5 = 90 minutes); it is sent to Clio as seconds. If price (hourly rate) is omitted Clio applies the firm's rate hierarchy; if user_id is omitted it records for the token's user. Clio: POST /activities.json with type TimeEntry. |
clio_create_task | write | Create a task WRITE: Create a task and assign it to a firm user or a contact, optionally on a matter with a due date and priority. Clio: POST /tasks.json. |
clio_update_task | write | Update a task WRITE: Update a task — mark it complete, change its status, due date, priority, name or description, or reassign it. Only the fields given are changed. Clio: PATCH /tasks/{id}.json. |
clio_create_note | write | Create a note WRITE: Add a note to a matter (type Matter + matter_id) or to a contact (type Contact + contact_id). Clio: POST /notes.json. |
clio_create_calendar_entry | write | Create a calendar entry WRITE: Put an event on a Clio calendar — a hearing, meeting or deadline — optionally linked to a matter. calendar_id is the calendar to put it on (the token user's own is default_calendar_id from clio_who_am_i). Clio: POST /calendar_entries.json. |
clio_usage_status | Usage status (free-tier meter) Report the caller's current free-tier usage this month: calls used, monthly limit, remaining, and whether the cap is reached. Read-only; does not count against the meter. | |
clio_request_feature | Request a missing feature Tell usefulapi that the user needs something the Clio tools cannot do yet (a missing tool, field or filter). Call it only when the user asks for something none of the tools can do, and tell the user that you send the request. Do not call it for errors or for normal requests. Do not include personal data, credentials or customer records. Stored with the product name and the client type (for example Claude or Cursor), without the user's account. At most 5 requests per day. Does not count against the meter. | |
clio_upgrade | Upgrade to Pro (unlimited) Subscribe to the Pro plan for UNLIMITED Clio tool calls (the free tier caps monthly usage). Choose monthly ($9/month) or yearly ($90/year — 2 months free) billing. Returns a short link to open in your browser (it opens Stripe Checkout); after payment your account upgrades automatically. Does not count against the meter. | |
clio_cancel_subscription | Cancel the Pro subscription Cancel the caller's Clio Pro subscription at the end of the paid period (no refund for the current period; unlimited calls continue until then, then the free tier applies). Requires confirm: true. Run clio_upgrade later to undo the cancel before the period ends. Does not count against the meter. |
| Plan | Price | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 50 tool calls / month |
| Proper user | $9/mo · $90/yr | Unlimited |
Pro covers this Clio server only. Subscribe with clio_upgrade (it returns a Stripe Checkout link). Cancel any time with clio_cancel_subscription: Pro continues to the end of the paid period, with no refund for the current period, and running clio_upgrade before then undoes the cancel. Or write to [email protected].
No. usefulapi is an independent service. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Clio. The server calls the Clio API with your own Clio access, so it sees only the data that your account can see.
Yes. In Claude, add this server's URL as a custom connector. In ChatGPT, add it as a custom MCP server in Plugins. Then log in once. Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code and Codex work too. See the setup steps.
A Clio account. You sign in to Clio and approve the access. You do not need an API key.
No. Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config. The server signs you in with OAuth: you sign in with your Clio account. If the config has such a header, remove it: some clients then send that header instead of the login token, and every call fails with 401.
The login stores them encrypted in the authorization grant of your connection. The server uses them to call the Clio API for you and to derive a private account id for usage metering. usefulapi does not show them on any page or in any reply. You can revoke the access in Clio at any time.
Yes, if you approve it. 7 of the 20 Clio tools can create or change data. The other 13 are marked read-only. Most MCP clients ask you to approve a tool call before it runs.
The Free plan gives 50 tool calls / month. Pro costs $9/mo or $90/yr, with unlimited tool calls, for this Clio server only. Run clio_usage_status to see how many calls you used.
Ask the AI to run clio_upgrade: it returns a Stripe Checkout link. To cancel, run clio_cancel_subscription. Pro continues to the end of the paid period.
Tell the AI what you wanted to do. It can send the request with clio_request_feature. We store the text with the server name, the type of AI client and the tool you tried, not with your account, and read every request when we plan new tools. You can send up to 5 requests per day.
Any client that supports remote MCP servers (Streamable HTTP) with OAuth login: Claude (web and desktop), Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and others.
This is a Model Context Protocol endpoint — meant to be connected from an AI client, not opened in a browser. An invalid_token response at the URL is the auth gate working as designed; clients authenticate automatically.
